Debbie has been involved in Obedience Training for over twenty years; she has trained several dogs for Novice and Open. She is currently training one of her Irish Water Spaniels for Open. She has earned CD and CDX titles in AKC obedience trials. Through associations with trainers and clubs over the years, she has become a devoted advocate of Leash and Collar training.
Leash and Collar training employs both collar corrections and reward treats as temporary tools used to guide the development of a desired new behavior. Once the behavior is learned, praise becomes a sufficient reward and motivation. Once basic commands and behavior are accomplished, they can be combined and modified to teach the dog any number of interesting and useful behaviors.
She has found that this is a good method to use for all dogs regardless of the eventual goal. An owner just wishing a reliable well behaved family Dog or one working to eventually earn titles and compete in AKC events will benefit from this training.
While Debbie enjoys showing her dogs in Obedience Trials, competition is not her focus. She has found that there is a greater benefit to this training: Obedience Training enhances communication with your dog, allowing full development of its companionship potential.
All classes require submission of an enrollment form and proof of vaccinations.
This course teaches owners to train their dogs to response to the basic commands: Sit, Down, Stay, Stand, Come, Walking in heel position. These basic commands form a firm foundation for obedience, control, and any further level of training that may be desired. Dogs must be a minimum of 6 months old.
This class refines behaviors learned in Beginning Obedience, with emphasis given to form and reliability. Distance and time are increased for Sits and Downs. Smoothness of motion and teamwork is enhanced for walking in heel position. The Figure Eight is introduced as well as Stand for Exam.
